What each CLB level actually means
Why these calculators exist
Every Canadian immigration pathway — Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, Canadian Citizenship — measures your English (or French) against the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or its French equivalent, the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC). But the tests you take — CELPIP, IELTS General Training, PTE Core, TEF Canada, TCF Canada — all score on different scales.
Our tools translate those scores into the CLB levels IRCC actually uses, so you know exactly where you stand before you book a test, submit a profile, or set a target score. The Express Entry CRS calculator then tells you how many of the 1,200 possible CRS points your language score (plus age, education, and work experience) is worth today.
Which tool should you use first?
If you already have test results, run the universal CLB calculator to see your CLB. If you have a full profile and want to estimate your ranking in the next Express Entry draw, go straight to the CRS calculator. If you haven't tested yet and are deciding which exam to take, read our CELPIP vs IELTS comparison.
How accurate are these calculators?
All conversion tables come directly from IRCC's published scoring equivalencies and are updated as IRCC revises them (most recently the PTE Core table added in 2024). The CRS calculator implements the Government of Canada's Comprehensive Ranking System criteria as of 2024. These tools are informational — your official score is the one on your test report.
