How the Comprehensive Ranking System works

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is Canada's point-based ranking tool for Express Entry. Every candidate gets a score out of 1,200 points, and in each Express Entry draw IRCC invites the top-ranked candidates to apply for Permanent Residency. Your CRS score determines whether you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

CRS point categories

Core factors (max 500 single / 460 with spouse)

  • Age: Up to 110 points. Peak between 20-29; declines rapidly after 35.
  • Education: Up to 150 points for a PhD.
  • First official language: Up to 136 points. CLB 9 earns 31 per ability; CLB 10+ earns 34.
  • Second official language: Up to 24 points.
  • Canadian work experience: Up to 80 points for 5+ years.

Spouse factors (max 40)

Education, language, and Canadian work experience of your spouse add up to 40 points if you have a spouse or common-law partner.

Skill transferability (max 100)

Combinations that unlock bonus points — the biggest being CLB 9+ language and a master's, PhD or two or more post-secondary credentials, worth 50 points on its own (25 with one credential such as a bachelor's). This is why hitting CLB 9 matters so much.

Additional (max 600)

  • Provincial Nomination: 600 points
  • Arranged employment: 0 points (removed 25 March 2025)
  • French proficiency: 25 or 50 points
  • Canadian education: 15 or 30 points
  • Sibling in Canada (citizen or PR): 15 points

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CRS score?

For the general program drawn in 2024-2026, cut-offs typically landed between 495-540. For category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, trades, French, education), cut-offs are often lower — sometimes 395-480. 500+ is considered competitive for general draws; 540+ is comfortable.

Which CRS factor gives the most points?

A Provincial Nomination (PNP) is worth 600 points — the single largest boost. Arranged employment (job offer) points were removed from Express Entry on 25 March 2025. For most candidates without PNP, the biggest lever is improving your language score to CLB 9+ to unlock the full Skill Transferability bonus (up to 100 points).

How accurate is this calculator?

The core-factor calculations (age, education, language, work experience) match IRCC's published tables exactly. Skill Transferability is implemented using the main criteria. Your official CRS score comes from your Express Entry profile — this tool is for planning and target-setting.

Can I improve my CRS score after creating a profile?

Yes — any time you add a new credential, improve your language score, gain work experience, receive a provincial nomination, or your spouse's details change, you update your profile and your CRS is recalculated automatically. There's no limit on how often you update.

What's the French-speaker bonus?

If you have NCLC 7+ in all four French modules AND CLB 5+ in all four English modules, you get 50 bonus points. If you have NCLC 7+ French but weaker English (below CLB 5), you still get 25 points. The 50-point bilingual bonus is one of the biggest point boosts for candidates willing to learn French.

How long is a CRS score valid?

Your Express Entry profile stays active for 12 months. If you don't receive an Invitation to Apply in that window, you need to resubmit with current information. Language test results separately expire after 2 years from the test date.
