While both tests evaluate Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, their structures are completely different. CELPIP is exclusively computer-delivered and done in a single 3-hour sitting. The IELTS test offers both paper and computer formats, but the Speaking section is frequently scheduled on a different day or at a different time, requiring you to manage two separate appointments.

CELPIP Speaking
You speak into a headset microphone while looking at a screen. There are 8 different short prompts (e.g., describing a picture, leaving a voicemail). A countdown timer is always visible.
IELTS Speaking
A live, 1-on-1 interview with a human examiner. It includes an introduction, a short monologue based on a cue card, and a two-way discussion.

CELPIP includes two tasks: writing an email (Task 1) and responding to a survey (Task 2). Because it's on a computer, it includes a built-in spell-checker and a live word counter.
IELTS General also includes an email (Task 1) and an essay (Task 2). IELTS essays are notoriously strict regarding academic structure and complex vocabulary. Even on the computer-delivered IELTS, there is no spell-checker available.

CELPIP audio exclusively features North American (Canadian) accents. The vocabulary revolves around everyday Canadian life—workplaces, grocery stores, and local news.
IELTS intentionally mixes accents from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and North America. If you are not used to thick British or Australian accents, you might find the IELTS listening section significantly harder to follow.

While IELTS now offers a computer-delivered option, CELPIP was built from the ground up for the computer. CELPIP's interface allows you to easily track your time, edit text fluidly, and see a word counter. However, for the CELPIP Speaking section, sitting in a room with 20 other people talking into their microphones at the same time can be distracting for some.
