PTE Core format at a glance
PTE Core is a 2-hour computer-based test with four modules. Speaking and Writing share a section (integrated tasks), Reading is standalone, and Listening comes last. All scoring is automated — there are no human examiners for Speaking.
Frequently asked questions
Is PTE Core accepted for Express Entry?
Yes — IRCC added PTE Core to the list of approved language tests in January 2024 (first tests from February 2024). It's accepted alongside CELPIP General and IELTS General Training for every Express Entry program and most PR pathways.
What PTE Core score do I need for CLB 9?
Listening 82, Reading 78, Writing 88, Speaking 84 — each equals CLB 9. All four together give you CLB 9 overall and unlock the Express Entry Skill Transferability bonus.
Is PTE Core easier than CELPIP or IELTS?
It depends on your strengths. PTE Core is fully computer-based with AI scoring (similar to CELPIP's automated grading), while IELTS Speaking is face-to-face. Candidates who struggle with human examiners often prefer PTE Core; candidates comfortable with Canadian English scenarios often do better on CELPIP.
What's the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Core?
PTE Academic is for university admissions. PTE Core is specifically for Canadian immigration (and some workplace/employment purposes). Only PTE Core is accepted for Express Entry — not PTE Academic.
How long are PTE Core results valid?
PTE Core results are valid for 2 years from the test date for IRCC applications. Your language results must be less than 2 years old when you submit your Express Entry profile.
