Reading and Listening are auto-scored by computer algorithms. Writing and Speaking are evaluated by multiple certified human raters, aided by automated benchmark quality checks.

Does CELPIP calculate an overall average band score?

No! Unlike IELTS which provides an Overall Band Score, CELPIP reports individual scores (Level 3 to 12) for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking separately. IRCC evaluates each component individually.

Are there un-scored questions on the CELPIP test?

Yes. CELPIP tests often contain un-scored experimental questions in Listening or Reading used to validate future test items. They do not affect your final score calculation.

How CELPIP Score is Calculated? (Scoring System Explained)

1. Reading & Listening: Raw Score to CELPIP Level Formula

Both Reading and Listening contain 38 scored multiple-choice questions. Your final band score (CELPIP Level 3 to 12) is calculated directly from your total number of correct answers:

2. Writing & Speaking: Multi-Rater Human Evaluation

Writing responses and Speaking audio recordings are assessed independently by certified raters. To ensure maximum fairness and eliminate rater bias, multiple raters grade your work across four equal categories:

Content & Coherence (25%)

Depth of ideas, organization, paragraph structure, and relevance to the prompt.

Vocabulary (25%)

Range of words, word choice precision, idiomatic expressions, and natural phrasing.

Readability / Listenability (25%)

Fluency, pronunciation clarity, grammar accuracy, punctuation, and sentence variation.

Task Fulfillment (25%)

Addressing all prompt bullets, appropriate tone, and completing target word count / timing.

3. Why CELPIP Does Not Have an "Overall Average Score"

Unlike IELTS which averages scores to produce an overall band (e.g. 7.5), CELPIP reports module scores independently (e.g. Listening: 9, Reading: 9, Writing: 8, Speaking: 8). IRCC evaluates each component separately against the CLB matrix.
