Which University Accepts CELPIP?

As the popularity of the CELPIP exam grows, many international students ask: which university accepts CELPIP? The answer is complicated, and it depends heavily on the specific institution and the type of program you are applying to.

1. The CELPIP-General Test vs Academic Tests

It is critical to understand that the standard CELPIP-General test is designed for immigration and professional certification, not for academic study. Because it tests everyday conversational English rather than academic reading and writing, most major Canadian universities (like UofT, UBC, or McGill) do not accept the CELPIP-General test for undergraduate or graduate admissions. They require IELTS Academic, TOEFL, or CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Test).

2. Exceptions and Specific Colleges

While major universities generally require academic tests, some regional colleges, vocational schools, and specific diploma programs across Canada may accept a high CELPIP-General score on a case-by-case basis. Some institutions in Alberta and British Columbia have historically accepted CELPIP for specific trades or continuing education programs. However, this is the exception, not the rule.
