Just like the Speaking module, your CELPIP Writing score is not calculated by an AI robot counting your spelling mistakes. It is evaluated by highly trained human raters using a holistic rubric. To move beyond the dreaded CLB 7 and reach a CLB 9+, you must understand exactly what these raters are trained to look for.

The Four Official Scoring Dimensions

Raters evaluate both Task 1 (the email) and Task 2 (the survey) across four dimensions. A perfect essay in one dimension will still fail if it ignores the other three.

1. Content/Coherence

This is the foundation of your writing. It measures how well you organize your thoughts and whether you actually answered the prompt.

Paragraphing: You must use paragraphs. A massive 200-word block of text is unreadable and will immediately lower your coherence score.
Development of Ideas: Do you just list ideas, or do you explain them? (e.g., stating "The park is good" vs. "The park provides a necessary green space for children to exercise away from city traffic").
Transitions: Are your sentences connected? Words like Furthermore, Conversely, As a result, and Consequently are the glue that holds a CLB 9 essay together.

2. Vocabulary

This dimension measures your lexical range and your control of tone.

Precision: Are you using the most accurate word? (e.g., "The weather was bad" vs. "The weather was atrocious").
Tone: Did you use formal language for a formal prompt, and casual language for a friend?
Natural Collocations: Do your words fit together naturally? (e.g., "make a mistake" instead of "do a mistake").

3. Readability

This dimension evaluates the mechanical flow of your writing. Can the rater read your essay smoothly without stumbling over awkward phrasing?

Formatting: Are you using capitalization correctly? Do you have proper punctuation at the ends of your sentences?
Redundancy: Are you repeating the same words or phrases over and over just to hit the word count?
Clarity: Is your central message obvious, or does the rater have to guess what you are trying to say?

4. Task Fulfillment

This dimension is primarily concerned with your grammar and whether you followed instructions.

Grammar Control: Do you use a variety of sentence structures (simple, compound, complex)? Do you have control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement?
Addressing the Prompt: Did you answer all three bullet points in Task 1? Did you explicitly choose an option in Task 2?
Word Count: Did you stay within the 150-200 word limit?

The Four-Pass Revision Method (Reaching CLB 9+)

The secret to a high writing score is not typing faster; it is leaving time to edit. If you have 27 minutes for a task, you should spend 5 minutes planning, 15 minutes typing, and 7 minutes editing. During those 7 minutes, use the Four-Pass Revision Method:

Pass 1: The Coherence Check

Read just the first sentence of every paragraph. Does the essay flow logically from beginning to end? Are your transition words present?

Pass 2: The Vocabulary Upgrade

Scan your essay for basic words like good, bad, happy, sad, big, small. Replace them with stronger, more precise adjectives. Scan for basic verbs like get, do, make and replace them with stronger action verbs.

Pass 3: The Grammar & Spelling Sweep

CELPIP provides a spell checker, but it is not perfect. It will not catch if you type "their" instead of "there." Check your subject-verb agreement (e.g., "The team are" -> "The team is"). Check that every sentence ends with a period.

Pass 4: The Tone & Prompt Audit

Look back at the original prompt. Did you answer all three bullet points? Finally, read the greeting and sign-off. Do they match the required tone?
