Health and fitness are incredibly common themes across all modules. You may need to advise a friend to lose weight (Speaking Task 1), defend the funding of a new city sports complex (Writing Task 2), or describe a chaotic football game (Speaking Task 3).
This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to discuss physical activity like a professional trainer.
🧱 The Core Nouns
Stop using generic words like game, working out, or running. Use these precise athletic nouns to anchor your sentences.
1. Endurance / Agility
- Definition: The fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way (Endurance), and the ability to move quickly and easily (Agility).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 5 (Comparing two workout routines).
- Example: "While Option A focuses purely on building muscle, Option B will drastically improve your cardiovascular endurance and agility."
2. Tournament / Stadium
- Definition: A sporting competition in which contestants play a series of games to decide the winner (Tournament), and a sports arena with tiers of seats for spectators (Stadium).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 3 (Describing a scene).
- Example: "In the background of the massive stadium, you can see the final match of the international tournament."
3. Athleticism / Nutrition
- Definition: The physical qualities that are characteristic of athletes, such as strength, fitness, and agility (Athleticism), and the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth (Nutrition).
- CELPIP Use Case: Writing Task 2 (Arguing for physical education in schools).
- Example: "Schools must teach children the value of both physical athleticism and proper dietary nutrition."
4. Referee / Injury
- Definition: An official who watches a game or match closely to ensure that the rules are adhered to (Referee), and an instance of being injured (Injury).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 2 (Telling a story).
- Example: "The referee was forced to stop the game immediately after the devastating knee injury."
🏃♂️ The Power Verbs
Verbs drive your sentence. Using active, formal verbs immediately increases your Readability and Vocabulary scores.
1. To Compete / To Train
- Definition: To strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others (Compete), and to teach a person a particular skill or type of behavior through practice and instruction (Train).
- Synonyms: Contend, Challenge / Practice, Exercise.
- Example: "If he hopes to compete at a professional level, he must train for at least six hours a day."
2. To Recover / To Stretch
- Definition: To return to a normal state of health, mind, or strength (Recover), and to straighten or extend one's body or a part of one's body to its full length (Stretch).
- Synonyms: Heal, Bounce back / Extend, Elongate.
- Example: "It is essential that you thoroughly stretch before the workout to ensure your muscles recover quickly."
3. To Tackle / To Score
- Definition: To make determined efforts to deal with a problem or difficult task, or to physically intercept an opponent (Tackle), and to gain a point or goal in a competitive game (Score).
- Synonyms: Confront, Intercept / Achieve, Obtain.
- Example: "The defender managed to aggressively tackle the player just before he could score the winning point."
4. To Coach / To Exercise
- Definition: To train or instruct (a team or player) (Coach), and to engage in physical activity to sustain or improve health and fitness (Exercise).
- Synonyms: Instruct, Mentor / Work out, Train.
- Example: "My doctor strongly advised me to exercise daily, so I hired a professional to coach me."
🎨 The Descriptive Adjectives
Adjectives provide the "color" that graders look for. Avoid saying workouts are hard, easy, or sweaty.
1. Vigorous / Strenuous
- Definition: Characterized by or involving physical strength, effort, or energy (Vigorous), and requiring or using great exertion (Strenuous).
- Synonyms: Energetic, Intense / Exhausting, Taxing.
- Example: "My doctor recommended 30 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity every day, rather than just one highly strenuous workout a week."
2. Competitive / Athletic
- Definition: Relating to or characterized by competition (Competitive), and physically strong, fit, and active (Athletic).
- Synonyms: Fierce, Cutthroat / Muscular, Robust.
- Example: "The environment in the gym was incredibly competitive, forcing everyone to push their athletic limits."
3. Sedentary / Physiological
- Definition: Tending to spend much time seated; somewhat inactive (Sedentary), and relating to the branch of biology that deals with the normal functions of living organisms and their parts (Physiological).
- Synonyms: Inactive, Desk-bound / Biological, Bodily.
- Example: "Living a highly sedentary lifestyle will eventually lead to severe physiological issues down the road."
⚠️ Avoid the Trap
When talking about fitness, test-takers often use basic "gym slang" rather than academic English.
- Instead of saying: "I am going to the gym to work out."
- Say: "I am engaging in a highly vigorous training session to build my endurance."
- Instead of saying: "He is very sporty."
- Say: "He possesses incredible athleticism and agility."
