Chapter 15
Beginner

Welcome to the premium deep dive into Food & Nutrition.

Food is universal, which means it appears everywhere on the CELPIP test. You may need to describe a disastrous dinner at a restaurant (Speaking Task 2), write an email complaining about poor catering (Writing Task 1), or listen to a podcast about healthy diets (Listening Part 4).

This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to discuss food like a seasoned nutritionist or a professional food critic.

🧱 The Core Nouns

Stop using generic words like food, meat, cooking, or meal. Use these precise culinary nouns to anchor your sentences.

4. Calorie / Malnutrition

🏃‍♂️ The Power Verbs

Verbs drive your sentence. Using active, formal verbs immediately increases your Readability and Vocabulary scores.

  • Example: "I prefer to bake the fish in the oven rather than cook it on the stovetop."

🎨 The Descriptive Adjectives

Adjectives provide the "color" that graders look for. Avoid saying food is good, bad, or yummy.

1. Nutritious / Processed

  • Definition: Nourishing; efficient as food (Nutritious), and perform a series of mechanical or chemical operations on (something) in order to change or preserve it (Processed).
  • Synonyms: Healthy, Wholesome / Artificial, Refined.
  • Example: "Parents must replace highly processed snacks with incredibly nutritious whole foods."

2. Delicious / Bland

3. Organic / Savory

  • Definition: (Of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents (Organic), and belonging to the category that is salty or spicy rather than sweet (Savory).
  • Synonyms: Natural, Chemical-free / Salty, Spicy.
  • Example: "I prefer a highly savory breakfast made entirely with fresh, organic ingredients."

⚠️ Avoid the Trap

When complaining about a restaurant (Writing Task 1), you must sound like a harsh but fair critic, not an angry child.

  • Instead of saying: "The food was very bad and tasted like nothing."
    • Say: "The cuisine was entirely bland and felt heavily processed."
  • Instead of saying: "You need to eat good food."
    • Say: "You must consume a highly nutritious diet full of lean proteins."
