Welcome to the premium deep dive into Hobbies & Leisure.
The CELPIP exam frequently asks you to discuss what you do in your free time. Speaking Task 2 asks you to tell a personal story (often about a hobby or trip), and Speaking Task 5 frequently involves choosing between two recreational activities (e.g., joining a pottery class vs. joining a book club).
This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to discuss your passions with sophistication.
🧱 The Core Nouns
Stop using generic words like fun, free time, thing I do, or group. Use these precise leisure nouns to anchor your sentences.
1. Pastime / Recreation
- Definition: An activity that someone does regularly for enjoyment rather than work; a hobby (Pastime), and activity done for enjoyment when one is not working (Recreation).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 2 (Telling a story about your weekend).
- Example: "Reading historical fiction has always been my absolute favorite pastime and primary form of recreation."
2. Enthusiast / Amateur
- Definition: A person who is highly interested in a particular activity or subject (Enthusiast), and a person who engages in a pursuit, especially a sport, on an unpaid basis (Amateur).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 1 (Giving advice on how to start a hobby).
- Example: "As a coffee enthusiast, I highly recommend that you buy a high-quality grinder, even if you are just a beginner amateur."
3. Collection / Craft
- Definition: A group of things or people (Collection), and an activity involving skill in making things by hand (Craft).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 8 (Describing an unusual object).
- Example: "The strange object looks like a handmade craft that belongs in a strange museum collection."
4. Outlet / Escapism
- Definition: A means of expressing one's talents, energy, or emotions (Outlet), and the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy (Escapism).
- CELPIP Use Case: Writing Task 2 (Survey about shorter work weeks).
- Example: "A four-day work week allows employees to find a creative outlet and enjoy some much-needed escapism from corporate stress."
🏃♂️ The Power Verbs
Verbs drive your sentence. Using active, formal verbs immediately increases your Readability and Vocabulary scores.
1. To Unwind / To Relax
- Definition: To relax after a period of work or tension (Unwind), and to rest or engage in an enjoyable activity so as to become less tired or anxious (Relax).
- Synonyms: Decompress, Chill / Rest, Loosen up.
- Example: "After a grueling 60-hour work week, I desperately need to sit by the lake and simply unwind."
2. To Engage / To Pursue
- Definition: To participate or become involved in (Engage), and to follow or seek to attain or accomplish a goal (Pursue).
- Synonyms: Participate, Take part / Follow, Chase.
- Example: "It is incredibly important to actively engage in the community and pursue your personal passions."
3. To Master / To Practice
- Definition: To acquire complete knowledge or skill in (a subject, technique, or art) (Master), and to perform (an activity) or exercise (a skill) repeatedly or regularly in order to improve or maintain one's proficiency (Practice).
- Synonyms: Learn thoroughly, Grasp / Rehearse, Drill.
- Example: "If you want to truly master the piano, you must aggressively practice for at least two hours a day."
4. To Collect / To Curate
- Definition: To bring or gather together (Collect), and to select, organize, and look after the items in a collection or exhibition (Curate).
- Synonyms: Gather, Accumulate / Organize, Select.
- Example: "I don't just collect vintage stamps; I carefully curate them in a climate-controlled album."
🎨 The Descriptive Adjectives
Adjectives provide the "color" that graders look for. Avoid saying hobbies are fun, hard, or good.
1. Recreational / Leisurely
- Definition: Relating to or denoting activity done for enjoyment when one is not working (Recreational), and acting or done at leisure; unhurried or relaxed (Leisurely).
- Synonyms: Fun, Enjoyable / Relaxed, Slow-paced.
- Example: "Instead of a highly competitive race, we opted for a leisurely and strictly recreational bike ride through the park."
2. Fascinating / Rewarding
- Definition: Extremely interesting (Fascinating), and providing satisfaction; gratifying (Rewarding).
- Synonyms: Captivating, Intriguing / Fulfilling, Satisfying.
- Example: "Building model airplanes is an incredibly fascinating and deeply rewarding pastime."
3. Creative / Tedious
- Definition: Relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work (Creative), and too long, slow, or dull; tiresome or monotonous (Tedious).
- Synonyms: Inventive, Imaginative / Boring, Tiresome.
- Example: "While painting is highly creative, the process of cleaning the brushes afterward is rather tedious."
⚠️ Avoid the Trap
When describing hobbies, test-takers often rely on the word "fun" repeatedly. You must elevate your descriptive language.
- Instead of saying: "I like playing video games in my free time because it is fun."
- Say: "Gaming is my favorite recreational pastime because it offers an incredibly fascinating form of escapism."
- Instead of saying: "I am doing a new hobby."
- Say: "I am currently pursuing a highly creative outlet."
