Welcome to the Essential Collocations module for Fitness & Sports.

CELPIP frequently uses health and fitness as a plot device. You might need to advise a friend to lose weight (Speaking Task 1), defend the funding of a new city sports complex (Writing Task 2), or describe a chaotic football game (Speaking Task 3).

To secure a CLB 9+, you cannot use basic "gym slang." You must use the formal collocations of a professional athletic trainer.

🤝 1. Verb + Noun Collocations

Do not translate verbs directly from your native language. Memorize these specific verb-noun pairs.

1. To Build Endurance

  • Meaning: To increase your physical stamina and ability to exercise for long periods.
  • The Trap: Do not say "make long energy" or "create staying power."
  • Example (Speaking Task 5): "While Option A builds muscle, Option B is much better if you want to build cardiovascular endurance."

2. To Suffer an Injury

  • Meaning: To experience physical harm or damage to the body.
  • The Trap: Do not say "get a hurt" or "catch an injury."
  • Example (Speaking Task 6): "I sincerely apologize for missing the hiking trip, but I managed to suffer a severe injury to my ankle yesterday."

3. To Train Rigorously

  • Meaning: To practice or exercise with extreme intensity and strict discipline.
  • The Trap: Do not say "practice very hard" or "do a strong workout."
  • Example (Speaking Task 2): "Before the marathon, I had to train rigorously for six months straight."

4. To Maintain Fitness

  • Meaning: To keep your body in good physical condition over a long period of time.
  • The Trap: Do not say "keep the health" or "hold the muscle."
  • Example (Writing Task 2): "Citizens must have access to affordable public gyms in order to effectively maintain their fitness."

🎨 2. Adjective + Noun Collocations

When describing sports and health, use these established adjective-noun pairs to sound incredibly fluent.

1. Vigorous Exercise

  • Meaning: Physical activity that requires great physical exertion and effort.
  • Example (Speaking Task 1): "The doctor recommends at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise every single day."

2. Sedentary Lifestyle

  • Meaning: A way of life that involves little physical activity and a lot of sitting.
  • Example (Writing Task 2): "The modern office environment promotes a highly dangerous and sedentary lifestyle."

3. Competitive Sports

  • Meaning: Athletic activities that involve playing against an opponent to win.
  • Example (Speaking Task 7): "I strongly believe that children should participate in competitive sports to learn teamwork."

4. Personal Trainer

  • Meaning: A professional who creates and supervises a fitness program for an individual.
  • Example (Speaking Task 1): "If I were you, I would immediately hire a personal trainer to prevent further injuries."

🚀 3. Adverb + Adjective Collocations (The CLB 9+ Flex)

The fastest way to boost your vocabulary score is to combine an 'ly' adverb with an advanced adjective. Banish the word "very" from your vocabulary.

1. Highly Competitive

  • Instead of: "Very competitive/Wants to win badly."
  • Example: "The atmosphere in the stadium was highly competitive during the final match."

2. Incredibly Strenuous

  • Instead of: "Very hard workout."
  • Example: "Mountain climbing is an incredibly strenuous activity that requires months of preparation."

3. Physically Demanding

  • Instead of: "Hard on the body."
  • Example: "Construction is a physically demanding job that takes a toll on your joints."

4. Mentally Exhausting

  • Instead of: "Tires my brain out."
  • Example: "Playing professional chess is not physically tiring, but it is mentally exhausting."

🎯 Module Specific Application

[!IMPORTANT]
Speaking Task 1 (Giving Advice):
Giving health advice is a classic CELPIP prompt. Do not use conversational English ("You should go to the gym"). Use clinical collocations.

Low Score: "You should go to the gym and work out hard so you don't get fat."
CLB 9+: "To combat your sedentary lifestyle, I highly recommend that you hire a personal trainer and engage in vigorous exercise to build your endurance."
