🖼️ Task 3: Describing a Scene

Welcome to Task 3. You will be presented with a complex, cartoon-style illustration of a busy scene (e.g., a chaotic classroom, a bustling city intersection, or a crowded park).

You have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.

The prompt will ask you to describe the scene so that someone who cannot see the picture can understand exactly what is happening. To achieve a CLB 9+, you must organize the chaos visually before you start speaking.

⏱️ The Psychology of the "Where's Waldo" Trap

The image provided by CELPIP is intentionally cluttered. There are usually 10 to 15 different distinct mini-actions happening simultaneously across the frame.

The Random Jumping Trap: Test-takers often panic when the clock starts. They describe a dog on the left, then jump to an airplane in the sky, then describe a child in the bottom right corner. The grader gets motion sickness trying to follow along. You will fail the Coherence pillar. You must establish a visual sweep pattern.

🎭 The "Camera Sweep" Strategy

Imagine you are a movie director operating a camera. You do not just snap the camera around randomly. You pan smoothly across the scene.

How to Beat It:
During your 30 seconds of prep time, decide on your "Camera Sweep" path.

The 3 Best Sweep Patterns:

Left to Right: Start on the far left side of the image and move systematically to the right. (Most natural for English speakers).
Foreground to Background: Start with the people closest to the "camera," then describe the middle ground, then describe the horizon.
Clockwise: Start at the top left, move to the top right, down to the bottom right, and across to the bottom left.

Once you pick a path, do not deviate from it. Stick to the path, describing the 3 or 4 most interesting things you encounter along the way.

🎯 Question Strategy: The "General to Specific" Opening

Before you start sweeping your camera, you must set the stage for the listener.

Do not start the recording by saying: "There is a red car."
Start with a General Overview Sentence that captures the entire vibe of the image, then dive into the specifics.

The Blueprint:

General: "This image depicts a highly active and somewhat chaotic scene at a local outdoor market on a sunny afternoon."
Specific (Start the Sweep): "Starting on the far left side of the foreground, I can see a vendor who is..."

This instantly proves to the grader that you understand the "Big Picture" before focusing on the micro-details.

📚 Essential "Overview" Vocabulary

Memorize these high-level phrases to start your Task 3 response with absolute authority.

Describing the Vibe (Busy)	"The environment appears to be highly active, with numerous individuals engaged in various tasks."

Transitioning to the Sweep	"To provide a detailed layout, starting from the left-hand side..."

❌ Top 3 Scene Description Mistakes

Trying to Describe Everything: You only have 60 seconds. You cannot describe 15 different actions. Pick the 3 or 4 most complex actions along your sweep path and describe them in extreme detail. Ignore the rest.
Using the Past Tense: The picture is happening right now. You must use the Present Continuous tense (e.g., The man is running, the dog is barking.). If you say "The man ran," you lose grammar points.
Stating the Obvious: Do not say, "There is a tree. It is green." The grader knows trees are green. Instead describe what the tree is doing: "There is a massive oak tree providing shade for a family having a picnic."

📅 Your 7-Day Scene Bootcamp

Train your eyes to organize visual chaos:

Day 1: Review the 3 Camera Sweep Patterns (Left/Right, Fore/Background, Clockwise).
Day 2: The "Where's Waldo" Drill. Search online for a "Where's Waldo" or "Busy Town" illustration. Point your finger at the screen and physically trace a Left-to-Right path, describing what your finger passes over.
Day 3: Take a Task 3 Practice Test. Focus entirely on nailing the "General Overview Sentence" before you start your sweep.
Day 4: Study the Essential "Overview" Vocabulary table.
Day 5: The Present Continuous Check. Look out the window of your home or office. Speak out loud for 60 seconds describing what is happening outside right now. Use the word "is [verb]-ing" in every sentence.
Day 6: Full Mock Test. Execute the General Opening and stick strictly to your chosen Camera Sweep path.
Day 7: Analyze your recording. Did you jump from the left to the right and back to the left? Force yourself to be disciplined with the "Camera."
