You will almost certainly encounter a technology prompt in the CELPIP exam. It is a favorite topic for Writing Task 2 (e.g., Should the company upgrade its software or buy new hardware?) and Speaking Task 5 (Comparing two digital devices).
This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to discuss the digital world like a Silicon Valley professional.
🧱 The Core Nouns
Stop using generic words like computer, program, or machine. Use these precise technological nouns to anchor your sentences.
1. Algorithm / Database
- Definition: A set of rules for calculations (Algorithm), and a structured set of data held in a computer (Database).
- CELPIP Use Case: Writing Task 2 (Discussing software upgrades).
- Example: "The new algorithm will search the entire database in a fraction of a second."
2. Hardware / Software
- Definition: The physical components of a computer (Hardware), and the programs used to direct the operation of a computer (Software).
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 5 (Comparing laptops).
- Example: "While Option A has better software, Option B's physical hardware is much more durable."
3. Interface / User Experience (UX)
- Definition: A device or program enabling a user to communicate with a computer.
- CELPIP Use Case: Writing Task 1 (Complaining about a bad app).
- Example: "I am writing to express my frustration with the completely broken user interface on your mobile application."
4. Glitch / Bug
- Definition: A sudden, usually temporary malfunction or fault of equipment.
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 6 (Apologizing for a missed deadline).
- Example: "I sincerely apologize, but a massive system glitch deleted my entire presentation."
🏃♂️ The Power Verbs
Verbs drive your sentence. Using active, formal verbs immediately increases your Readability and Vocabulary scores.
1. To Automate
- Definition: To convert a process to largely automatic operation.
- Synonyms: Mechanize, Computerize.
- Example: "If we automate the data entry process, we will save thousands of hours."
2. To Encrypt
- Definition: To convert information or data into a cipher or code, especially to prevent unauthorized access.
- Synonyms: Cipher, Secure, Code.
- Example: "It is absolutely crucial that we encrypt all customer financial data."
3. To Troubleshoot
- Definition: To analyze and solve serious problems for a company or other organization.
- Synonyms: Diagnose, Resolve, Fix.
- Example: "The IT department spent five hours trying to troubleshoot the server outage."
4. To Upgrade / To Optimize
- Definition: To raise something to a higher standard (Upgrade), and to make the best or most effective use of a situation/resource (Optimize).
- Synonyms: Improve, Enhance / Maximize, Perfect.
- Example: "We must upgrade the system to optimize our daily workflow."
🎨 The Descriptive Adjectives
Adjectives provide the "color" that graders look for. Avoid saying things are new, old, or easy.
1. Cutting-edge / State-of-the-art
- Definition: Highly advanced; innovative or pioneering.
- Synonyms: Advanced, Modern, Futuristic.
- Example: "The new research facility features entirely cutting-edge technology."
2. Obsolete / Outdated
- Definition: No longer produced or used; out of date. (The CLB 9+ word for "old").
- Synonyms: Archaic, Antiquated.
- Example: "Relying on physical paper files is completely obsolete in today's digital landscape."
3. Intuitive
- Definition: Easy to use and understand without explicit instruction.
- Synonyms: User-friendly, Simple, Instinctive.
- Example: "The new tablet is incredibly intuitive, making it perfect for older generations."
⚠️ Avoid the Trap
When discussing technology, avoid getting bogged down in extreme technical jargon that you might misspell or misuse. Keep it broadly professional.
- Instead of saying: "The computer is broken and slow."
- Say: "The hardware is severely outdated and prone to glitches."
- Instead of saying: "The new program is easy."
- Say: "The new software features a highly intuitive interface."
