Essential Vocabulary: Healthcare & Medicine

Medical scenarios frequently appear in both the CELPIP Listening and Speaking modules. You might hear a conversation between a doctor and a patient (Listening Part 3), or you might have to advise a friend who is feeling unwell (Speaking Task 1).
This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to discuss health with clinical precision.
🧱 The Core Nouns
Stop using generic words like sick, hurt, or medicine. Use these highly specific medical nouns to anchor your sentences.
1. Symptom / Diagnosis
- Definition: A sign of illness (Symptom), and the identification of the illness (Diagnosis).
- CELPIP Use Case: Listening (Identifying what is wrong with the speaker).
- Example: "Based on her severe symptoms, the doctor provided a formal diagnosis of pneumonia."
2. Prescription / Medication
- Definition: An instruction written by a doctor authorizing a patient to be provided a medicine.
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 1 (Advising a friend).
- Example: "If I were you, I would go to the clinic to get a proper prescription."
3. Immunity / Epidemic
- Definition: Protection against a disease (Immunity), and a widespread occurrence of a disease (Epidemic).
- CELPIP Use Case: Writing Task 2 (Survey about public health).
- Example: "The city must invest in vaccination programs to boost public immunity and prevent an epidemic."
4. Recovery / Rehabilitation
- Definition: A return to a normal state of health.
- CELPIP Use Case: Speaking Task 5 (Comparing treatments).
- Example: "Option A offers a much faster recovery period, making it vastly superior."
🏃♂️ The Power Verbs
Verbs drive your sentence. Using active, formal verbs immediately increases your Readability and Vocabulary scores.
1. To Alleviate
- Definition: To make (suffering, deficiency, or a problem) less severe. (The CLB 9+ word for "help").
- Synonyms: Relieve, Ease, Mitigate.
- Example: "This treatment is designed to alleviate chronic back pain."
2. To Contract / To Transmit
- Definition: To catch a disease (Contract), and to pass a disease to others (Transmit).
- Synonyms: Catch, Develop / Spread, Pass on.
- Example: "He contracted the virus overseas and inadvertently transmitted it to his family."
3. To Diagnose
- Definition: To identify the nature of an illness by examination of the symptoms.
- Synonyms: Identify, Determine.
- Example: "It took specialists three weeks to accurately diagnose the rare condition."
4. To Examine / To Monitor
- Definition: To inspect thoroughly (Examine), and to observe progress over time (Monitor).
- Synonyms: Inspect, Check / Observe, Track.
- Example: "The physician must monitor your heart rate for the next 24 hours."
🎨 The Descriptive Adjectives
Adjectives provide the "color" that graders look for. Avoid saying things are bad, spreading, or deadly.
1. Chronic vs. Acute
- Definition: Persisting for a long time (Chronic), versus severe and sudden (Acute).
- Example: "He suffers from chronic asthma, but yesterday he experienced an acute attack."
2. Contagious
- Definition: Spread from one person or organism to another by direct or indirect contact.
- Synonyms: Infectious, Transmissible.
- Example: "You must stay home from work; the flu is highly contagious."
3. Terminal / Lethal
- Definition: Predicted to lead to death (Terminal), or sufficient to cause death (Lethal).
- Synonyms: Incurable, Fatal / Deadly.
- Example: "Unfortunately, the disease has reached a terminal stage."
⚠️ Avoid the Trap
When discussing medicine, test-takers often translate directly from their native language.
- Instead of saying: "I drink my medicine."
- Say: "I take my medication."
- Instead of saying: "The doctor found what I have."
- Say: "The doctor diagnosed my condition."
