Prepositions are the most common source of grammatical errors in CELPIP Writing and Speaking. Master these exact rules to secure a Band 9+ in Grammar.

The Enclosed Preposition

"In"

For Time (Broad/Long periods)

Months, Years, Seasons, Centuries
"in July", "in 2024", "in the summer", "in the 21st century"
Parts of the day
"in the morning", "in the afternoon", "in the evening" (but "at night")

For Place (Enclosed/Large areas)

Countries, Cities, Neighborhoods
"in Canada", "in Toronto", "in downtown"
Enclosed spaces
"in a room", "in a car", "in a box", "in the building"

The Surface Preposition

"On"

For Time (Specific Days)

Days of the week
"on Monday", "on Fridays"
Specific Dates and Holidays
"on July 4th", "on New Year's Day", "on my birthday"

For Place (Surfaces/Lines)

Physical surfaces
"on the table", "on the wall", "on the floor", "on the page"
Streets, Avenues, Rivers
"on Main Street", "on the coast", "on the bus" (public transport)

The Specific Preposition

"At"

For Time (Exact points)

Clock times
"at 3:00 PM", "at midnight", "at noon"
Specific points in time
"at the moment", "at the same time", "at the beginning"

For Place (Specific points)

Exact addresses or locations
"at 123 Main St", "at the corner", "at the bus stop"
Public places/events

The Purpose Preposition

"For"
