In the CELPIP Writing rubric, the Vocabulary Pillar is the fastest way to increase your score from a CLB 7 to a CLB 9+.

However, "Advanced Vocabulary" does not mean using 15-letter academic words that no one actually speaks. It means using Precise Language and Collocations (words that naturally belong together in English).

⏱️ The Psychology of "Precision"

Graders are allergic to vague words. When you use words like good, bad, big, small, very, thing, or stuff, you are forcing the grader to guess what you mean.

The "Very" Trap: Test-takers often try to make a weak word stronger by putting "very" in front of it. Very big. Very angry. Very important. This is a CLB 5 habit. You must replace the two-word phrase with a single, precise, extreme adjective.
Very big = Massive.
Very angry = Furious.
Very important = Crucial.

🎭 The Power of Collocations

A collocation is a pair of words that Native English speakers naturally pair together. Using them proves to the grader that you understand the "flow" of the language, not just dictionary definitions.

Wrong (Translated): "I did a mistake."
Right (Collocation): "I made a mistake."
Wrong (Translated): "We need to do a decision."
Right (Collocation): "We need to make a decision."

You must intentionally sprinkle verb-noun and adjective-noun collocations throughout your essay.

🎯 Question Strategy: The "Adverb-Adjective" Upgrade

The ultimate vocabulary flex is pairing a high-level Adverb (an 'ly' word) with a high-level Adjective. This combination instantly guarantees a top score in the Vocabulary pillar.

The Formula: [Adverb] + [Adjective]

Basic: "The broken laptop was a big problem."
Advanced: "The defective hardware was highly problematic."
Basic: "The new gym is a good idea."
Advanced: "The proposed facility is undeniably beneficial."

By combining these words, you double the density of your advanced vocabulary without increasing your word count.

📚 Essential CLB 9+ Vocabulary Replacements

Ban the basic words on the left from your vocabulary and replace them with the advanced words on the right.

❌ Top 3 Vocabulary Mistakes

The "Thesaurus" Trap: Test-takers memorize a huge, obscure word (e.g., Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis) and try to force it into a sentence where it doesn't belong. If you use a big word incorrectly, you lose more points than if you just used a simple word correctly. Only use words you fully understand!
Repeating Keywords: If the prompt is about a "Library", do not use the word "Library" 8 times in your essay. Use synonyms: The facility, the community hub, the institution, the building.
Using Slang in Task 2: Task 2 (the survey) is always a professional setting. Never use words like cool, awesome, kids, cops, or bucks (for dollars). Use excellent, children, police officers, and funds.

Upgrade your mental dictionary:

Day 1: Review the "Very Trap" and the Adverb-Adjective Upgrade.
Day 2: The "Ban List" Drill. Look at the Banned Words table. For the next 24 hours, you are not allowed to say the words "Good" or "Bad" out loud. Force your brain to find alternatives.
