Welcome to the Essential Collocations module for Media & Entertainment.

The media heavily influences our daily lives, and CELPIP frequently tests your ability to discuss it. You may have to debate whether the news is too negative (Writing Task 2), describe your favorite movie (Speaking Task 2), or listen to an interview with an author (Listening Part 5).

To score a CLB 9+, you must use the established collocations of a professional journalist or film critic.

🤝 1. Verb + Noun Collocations

Do not translate verbs directly from your native language. Memorize these specific verb-noun pairs.

1. To Broadcast the News

Meaning: To transmit news programs on television or radio.
The Trap: Do not say "show the news" or "tell the news."
Example (Speaking Task 7): "It is highly unethical for networks to broadcast the news without verifying the facts first."

2. To Grab the Headlines

Meaning: To be featured prominently in the news; to get a lot of public attention.
The Trap: Do not say "take the title" or "be the top news."
Example (Listening Part 5): "The celebrity scandal managed to completely grab the headlines for weeks."

3. To Censor Content

Meaning: To suppress unacceptable parts of media (like removing violence from a movie).
The Trap: Do not say "hide the movie" or "delete the bad parts."
Example (Writing Task 2): "I firmly believe the government should never censor content on the internet."

4. To Stream a Movie

Meaning: To watch a movie over the internet without downloading it.
The Trap: Do not say "internet a movie" or "play a movie on the web."
Example (Speaking Task 5): "While Option A requires going to a crowded theater, Option B allows us to instantly stream the movie from home."

🎨 2. Adjective + Noun Collocations

When describing media, use these established adjective-noun pairs to sound incredibly fluent.

1. Mainstream Media

Meaning: The traditional and widely accepted forms of media (like major TV networks and newspapers).
Example (Speaking Task 7): "The mainstream media often ignores local, community-based stories."

2. Live Broadcast

Meaning: A program that is transmitted as it happens, rather than being pre-recorded.
Example (Speaking Task 2): "We managed to get tickets to watch the live broadcast of the comedy show in person."

3. Biased Reporting

Meaning: News that unfairly favors one side of an argument or political party.
Example (Writing Task 2): "Citizens are losing faith in journalists due to the extreme amount of biased reporting."

4. Captivating Performance

Meaning: Acting that is so good it completely holds your attention.
Example (Speaking Task 2): "The lead actor delivered an incredibly captivating performance that deserved an award."

🚀 3. Adverb + Adjective Collocations (The CLB 9+ Flex)

The fastest way to boost your vocabulary score is to combine an 'ly' adverb with an advanced adjective. Banish the word "very" from your vocabulary.

1. Highly Entertaining

Instead of: "Very fun to watch."
Example: "Despite the poor reviews, I found the documentary to be highly entertaining."

2. Widely Watched

Instead of: "Lots of people watch it."
Example: "The championship game is the most widely watched television event of the year."

3. Deeply Influential

Instead of: "Very important to culture."
Example: "The director is widely considered to be one of the most deeply influential figures in modern cinema."

4. Critically Acclaimed

Instead of: "The reviewers liked it."
Example: "We decided to watch the critically acclaimed indie film rather than the massive blockbuster."

🎯 Module Specific Application

Speaking Task 2 (Personal Experience):
When asked to talk about your favorite movie or book, do not just recount the plot ("Then the hero fought the bad guy"). Critique it using collocations.

Low Score: "The movie was very good and the actor was great."
CLB 9+: "The movie was a critically acclaimed masterpiece, primarily because the lead actress delivered such a captivating performance."
