Technology is rapidly evolving, and the CELPIP exam reflects this. You will frequently be asked to debate the impact of technology on society (Writing Task 2) or compare digital devices (Speaking Task 5).
To secure a CLB 9+, you cannot just say a computer is "new and fast." You must use the established technical collocations that native speakers use in the corporate world.
🤝 1. Verb + Noun Collocations
Do not translate verbs directly from your native language. Memorize these specific verb-noun pairs.
1. To Develop Software
- Meaning: To create computer programs.
- The Trap: Do not say "make a program" or "build software."
- Example (Speaking Task 2): "During my time at university, my team managed to develop software that translated languages in real-time."
2. To Troubleshoot Issues
- Meaning: To locate and fix problems in a mechanical or technical system.
- The Trap: Do not say "find the problem" or "fix the broken thing."
- Example (Writing Task 1): "I spent three hours on the phone with customer service trying to troubleshoot the issues with my router."
3. To Upgrade Hardware
- Meaning: To replace older physical computer parts with newer, faster ones.
- The Trap: Do not say "buy new computer pieces."
- Example (Writing Task 2): "Instead of hiring more staff, the company should upgrade its hardware to boost efficiency."
4. To Optimize Performance
- Meaning: To make a system work as fast and efficiently as possible.
- The Trap: Do not say "make it run better."
- Example (Speaking Task 5): "Option A includes a much faster processor, which will significantly optimize performance."
🎨 2. Adjective + Noun Collocations
When describing technology, use these established adjective-noun pairs to sound incredibly fluent.
1. Cutting-edge Technology
- Meaning: The most advanced and innovative technology currently available.
- Example (Writing Task 2): "Schools must invest in cutting-edge technology to prepare students for the modern workforce."
2. Intuitive Interface
- Meaning: A digital layout that is easy to understand and use without instructions.
- Example (Speaking Task 5): "While Option B is more expensive, it features a highly intuitive interface that my grandmother can easily use."
3. Obsolete Device
- Meaning: A piece of technology that is no longer used because something newer exists.
- Example (Speaking Task 7): "Smartphones have rendered traditional digital cameras completely obsolete devices."
4. Virtual Environment
- Meaning: A computer-generated, three-dimensional representation of a setting.
- Example (Speaking Task 4): "I predict that in the next ten years, all classroom learning will take place in a virtual environment."
🚀 3. Adverb + Adjective Collocations (The CLB 9+ Flex)
The fastest way to boost your vocabulary score is to combine an 'ly' adverb with an advanced adjective. Banish the word "very" from your vocabulary.
1. Highly Innovative
- Instead of: "Very new/creative."
- Example: "The startup released a highly innovative application that disrupted the entire market."
2. Technologically Advanced
- Instead of: "Very high-tech."
- Example: "Japan is widely considered to be one of the most technologically advanced nations on Earth."
3. Completely Automated
- Instead of: "Does it all by itself."
- Example: "The new factory assembly line is completely automated, requiring zero human intervention."
4. Extremely Versatile
- Instead of: "Very useful for many things."
- Example: "A tablet is an extremely versatile device that can be used for both reading and word processing."

When comparing two laptops, phones, or software packages, you must contrast their features using these technical collocations.Low Score: "Option A is a very new computer and it is very fast."
