Collocations for Relationships & Family
Master the natural verb-noun and adjective-noun combinations regarding relationships & family.
Welcome to the Essential Collocations module for Relationships & Family.
Interpersonal dynamics are a massive part of CELPIP. You will constantly be placed in scenarios where you must give advice to a struggling friend (Speaking Task 1), resolve a conflict with a neighbor (Speaking Task 6), or write an email to an acquaintance (Writing Task 1).
To secure a CLB 9+, you cannot use basic words like "we had a fight" or "he is my good friend." You must use precise emotional collocations.
🤝 1. Verb + Noun Collocations
Do not translate verbs directly from your native language. Memorize these specific verb-noun pairs.
1. To Resolve a Conflict
- Meaning: To find a peaceful solution to a serious disagreement.
- The Trap: Do not say "fix the fight" or "stop the angry."
- Example (Speaking Task 6): "I am calling because I truly want to sit down and resolve this conflict between us."
2. To Reach a Compromise
- Meaning: To make an agreement where both sides give up a little bit of what they want.
- The Trap: Do not say "make a half deal" or "agree in the middle."
- Example (Speaking Task 6): "Instead of arguing, I am confident we can easily reach a mutual compromise."
3. To Offer Support
- Meaning: To provide emotional or physical help to someone.
- The Trap: Do not say "give help" or "do support."
- Example (Speaking Task 1): "I am calling simply to offer my support during this incredibly difficult time."
4. To Build a Bond
- Meaning: To develop a strong emotional connection with someone.
- The Trap: Do not say "make a connection" or "create a friend."
- Example (Speaking Task 2): "We managed to instantly build a strong bond over our shared love of music."
🎨 2. Adjective + Noun Collocations
When describing relationships, use these established adjective-noun pairs to sound incredibly fluent.
1. Mutual Respect
- Meaning: A feeling of deep admiration that both people share for each other.
- Example (Writing Task 1): "A professional working environment must be built entirely on a foundation of mutual respect."
2. Dysfunctional Relationship
- Meaning: A relationship that does not work normally and causes emotional damage.
- Example (Speaking Task 1): "If I were you, I would immediately walk away from that highly dysfunctional relationship."
3. Close Acquaintance
- Meaning: Someone you know better than a stranger, but not as well as a true friend.
- Example (Speaking Task 2): "I was invited to the wedding by a close acquaintance from my university days."
4. Generation Gap
- Meaning: A difference of opinions between one generation and another regarding beliefs, politics, or values.
- Example (Listening Part 5): "The sociologist explained that the massive generation gap is causing friction within families."
🚀 3. Adverb + Adjective Collocations (The CLB 9+ Flex)
The fastest way to boost your vocabulary score is to combine an 'ly' adverb with an advanced adjective. Banish the word "very" from your vocabulary.
1. Incredibly Supportive
- Instead of: "Very helpful/nice."
- Example: "During my illness, my family and friends were all incredibly supportive."
2. Deeply Bonded
- Instead of: "Very close."
- Example: "Despite living in different countries, the two sisters remain deeply bonded."
3. Fiercely Loyal
- Instead of: "Very good friend."
- Example: "A dog is known for being a fiercely loyal companion."
4. Completely Estranged
- Instead of: "Don't talk anymore."
- Example: "After the massive argument over the will, he became completely estranged from his brother."
