Welcome to the Essential Collocations module for Workplace & Office Culture.

Knowing the word "deadline" is good (CLB 6). Knowing that you must "meet a deadline" is better (CLB 8). Knowing that you must "meet a strict deadline" is elite (CLB 10+).

Collocations are words that naturally go together in English. Native speakers do not translate grammar; they use pre-packaged chunks of language. If you use these specific pairings, the CELPIP grader instantly recognizes you as a fluent speaker.

🤝 1. Verb + Noun Collocations

Do not translate verbs directly from your native language. Memorize these specific verb-noun pairs.

1. To Meet a Deadline

  • Meaning: To finish work by the agreed-upon time.
  • The Trap: Do not say "do a deadline" or "finish a deadline."
  • Example (Writing Task 1): "I am writing to request an extension because it is currently impossible for me to meet the deadline."

2. To Chair a Meeting

  • Meaning: To be the person in charge of a formal meeting.
  • The Trap: Do not say "boss a meeting" or "control a meeting."
  • Example (Speaking Task 2): "Last week, my supervisor unexpectedly asked me to chair the meeting for the new marketing campaign."

3. To Implement a Policy

  • Meaning: To officially put a new rule into action.
  • The Trap: Do not say "make a rule" or "start a policy."
  • Example (Writing Task 2): "The company must immediately implement a policy regarding remote work."

4. To Delegate Tasks

  • Meaning: To assign responsibilities to other people.
  • The Trap: Do not say "give jobs" or "share work."
  • Example (Speaking Task 1): "If you want to reduce your stress, you must learn how to effectively delegate tasks to your junior team members."

🎨 2. Adjective + Noun Collocations

When describing the workplace, use these established adjective-noun pairs to sound incredibly fluent.

1. Hostile Environment

  • Meaning: A workplace where employees feel uncomfortable, threatened, or intimidated.
  • Example (Speaking Task 6): "I am forced to resign because the management has created an incredibly hostile environment."

2. Constructive Feedback

  • Meaning: Useful comments and suggestions that are intended to help someone improve.
  • Example (Writing Task 1): "Thank you for taking the time to review my presentation and provide such constructive feedback."

3. Heavy Workload

  • Meaning: A very large amount of work that needs to be done.
  • Example (Speaking Task 5): "While Option A pays a higher salary, it comes with a dangerously heavy workload."

4. Mutual Agreement

  • Meaning: An arrangement or decision that both sides agree to.
  • Example (Speaking Task 6): "I am confident that if we sit down and discuss the issue, we can reach a mutual agreement."

🚀 3. Adverb + Adjective Collocations (The CLB 9+ Flex)

The fastest way to boost your vocabulary score is to combine an 'ly' adverb with an advanced adjective. Banish the word "very" from your vocabulary.

1. Highly Productive

  • Instead of: "Very fast/good at working."
  • Example: "Our new software system is highly productive and saves us hours of manual data entry."

2. Fiercely Competitive

  • Instead of: "Very competitive."
  • Example: "To survive in this fiercely competitive market, we must innovate constantly."

3. Extremely Demanding

  • Instead of: "Very hard."
  • Example: "The new CEO is extremely demanding and expects everyone to work on weekends."

4. Deeply Committed

  • Instead of: "Very loyal."
  • Example: "I am deeply committed to the long-term success of this organization."

Writing Task 1 (The Professional Email):
When writing an email to a boss or colleague, your tone must be formal. Using collocations is the easiest way to achieve this.

Low Score: "I can't do the work because it is too much."
CLB 9+: "I regret to inform you that I cannot meet the strict deadline due to my currently heavy workload."
