Welcome to Task 8, the final and most infamous challenge of the CELPIP Speaking test.
You have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak.
You will be presented with an image of something that does not exist in the real world (e.g., a bicycle with square wheels and wings, or a coffee machine that also washes dogs). The prompt will tell you that you are on the phone with a store clerk, trying to describe this object so they can find it in the back room.
To achieve a CLB 9+, you must remain calm and use highly precise, descriptive language to explain the unexplainable.
⏱️ The Psychology of the "Blank Stare"
The illustrators specifically design these objects so that there is no English word for them. They want to see what happens when your brain breaks.

The Panic Freeze: Test-takers stare at the image of the dog-washing coffee machine and panic because they don't know the vocabulary word for it. There is no vocabulary word for it! If you freeze, you fail. You must immediately abandon trying to name the object and start describing its components.
🎭 The "Anatomy" Strategy
You cannot describe the whole object at once. You must break it down into pieces, just like a doctor examining anatomy.
The 60-Second Blueprint:
1. The Phone Greeting & The "Hook" (10 seconds)
- You are calling a store. Act like it! Give the clerk a warning that the object is strange.
- Example: "Hi there, I'm calling to see if you have a very specific, rather unusual item in stock. It's incredibly difficult to describe, but I'll do my best."
2. The Base/Foundation (15 seconds)
- What is the main body of the object? Compare it to something normal.
- Example: "The base of the object looks exactly like a traditional, stainless steel espresso machine, complete with a water tank in the back."
3. The Bizarre Attachments (25 seconds)
- Describe the weird parts that are sticking out. Use spatial prepositions (Chapter 8).
- Example: "However, attached directly to the right side of the machine is a large, clear plastic tub. Coming out of the steam wand is what appears to be a miniature showerhead, and sitting inside the tub is a small mechanical dog."
4. The Closing Request (10 seconds)
- End the phone call naturally.
- Example: "I know it sounds completely absurd, but do you happen to have anything even resembling that in your inventory?"
🎯 Question Strategy: The "Simile" Hack
When you don't know the word for a shape, use a Simile (comparing one thing to another using "like" or "as").
How to Beat It:
- If you see a weird curved piece of metal, don't try to guess the engineering term.
- Say: "It has a large metal bar that looks exactly like the handle of a garden shovel."
- If you see a weird texture.
- Say: "The surface is covered in a material that resembles the scales of a fish."
Using comparisons proves your fluency because it shows you can connect visual concepts across your English vocabulary.

❌ Top 3 Unusual Situation Mistakes
- Forgetting the Roleplay: The prompt explicitly says, "Call the store clerk." If you just start talking to the computer saying, "This is a weird picture," you fail the Task Fulfillment pillar. You must say, "Hello, I'm calling your store to ask..."
- Giving Up: Saying, "I don't know what this is. I can't describe it." The grader doesn't know what it is either! Just describe the colors and the shapes. ("It's a red rectangle with blue circles on it.")
- Overcomplicating the Details: Do not try to describe every single button or screw on the weird machine. Focus on the 3 biggest, weirdest features (e.g., the wings, the tub, the wheels).

Train your brain to describe the impossible:
- Day 1: Review the "Anatomy" Strategy (Base -> Attachments).
- Day 2: The "Alien" Drill. Find a picture of a bizarre, complex machine (like a jet engine or a factory loom). Pretend you are calling an alien who has never seen one. Describe its shapes and parts using the "Simile Hack."
- Day 3: Take a Task 8 Practice Test. Focus entirely on nailing the Phone Greeting roleplay before describing the object.
- Day 4: Study the Essential "Unusual" Vocabulary. Practice using the word "Protruding."
- Day 5: The Texture Drill. Look around your room. Pick 3 objects. Describe their textures using advanced words (e.g., smooth, porous, jagged, metallic, synthetic).
- Day 6: Full Mock Test. Execute the 60-second blueprint. Remember to end the phone call naturally.
- Day 7: Analyze your recording. Did you panic? Did you forget to act like you were on the phone? Remember, confidence is key in Task 8.
