Welcome to the premium deep dive into Environment & Climate.

This is a massive topic on the CELPIP exam. You are highly likely to encounter a Reading passage about a new green technology, or a Writing Task 2 survey asking whether a city should invest in parks or parking lots.

This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to discuss the environment with scientific authority.

🧱 The Core Nouns

Stop using generic words like nature, trash, or trees. Use these precise ecological nouns to anchor your sentences.

1. Ecosystem / Biodiversity

  • Definition: A biological community of interacting organisms (Ecosystem), and the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat (Biodiversity).
  • CELPIP Use Case: Writing Task 2 (Defending the preservation of a park).
  • Example: "Destroying the local park would devastate the fragile ecosystem and completely eliminate the area's biodiversity."

4. Pollutant / Contaminant

🏃‍♂️ The Power Verbs

Verbs drive your sentence. Using active, formal verbs immediately increases your Readability and Vocabulary scores.

Adjectives provide the "color" that graders look for. Avoid saying things are green, dirty, or bad for the Earth.

⚠️ Avoid the Trap

When discussing the environment, test-takers often use overly simplistic language that fails to demonstrate high-level vocabulary.

  • Instead of saying: "Cars make the air dirty."
    • Say: "Vehicles emit toxic pollutants into the atmosphere."
  • Instead of saying: "We need to save the trees."
    • Say: "We must focus on the conservation of our local ecosystems."
