Essential Vocabulary: Retail & Consumerism
Learn the core terminology, synonyms, and definitions related to retail & consumerism.
Welcome to the premium deep dive into Retail & Consumerism.
Buying things, returning broken things, and dealing with customer service are massive parts of the CELPIP exam. Writing Task 1 is almost always an email complaining to a store manager about a terrible product. Speaking Task 5 often asks you to compare two products (e.g., a cheap vacuum vs. an expensive vacuum).
This chapter provides the foundational vocabulary to complain, compare, and critique like a high-level consumer.

⚠️ Avoid the Trap
When complaining in Writing Task 1, test-takers use incredibly repetitive and basic emotional language. You must sound like a lawyer writing a formal complaint, not a child throwing a tantrum.
- Instead of saying: "I bought your thing and it is broken, give me my money back."
- Say: "I recently purchased your merchandise, but because it arrived highly defective, I am demanding a full refund."
- Instead of saying: "Option A is cheaper to buy."
- Say: "Option A offers a significantly lower retail price point at the time of transaction."
